Dump cakes are one of the easiest dishes to make, and they work perfectly for a last-minute dessert. The name is just as it implies. A basic dump cake requires only three, sometimes four, ingredients and absolutely zero baking ability.
The first step is to select your filling. This can be either a couple cans of cherry pie filling, a can of cherry pie filling and a can of pineapple, two cans of apple pie filling or whatever your fruit preference. Simply dump the two cans of your fruit filling in a baking dish and spread. Then pour a box of yellow cake mix on top and evenly distribute. The last step is to slice up one stick of butter and place it around the top of the cake mix.
Options for fillings can include blueberry, apple, cherry, pineapple, raspberry, peach, pumpkin, rhubarb or key lime. And don’t be afraid to mix and match the flavors. Just be sure to have two cans for the recipe. It doesn’t matter which two cans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour, and, voila.
If you want to take your dump cake to another level, here are a few “extras” to accompany the basic recipe.
– Use chocolate cake mix instead of yellow. This is amazing with cherry filling.
– Add in chocolate chips to your favorite flavors.
– Add any nuts, especially pecan, to accompany some of the fruit fillings.
