Yogyakarta recently held Festival Makan Miedes (Miedes Eating Festival) to promote its local traditional dish of spicy noodles.
The festival was held as part of the Pundong Expo, held from May 9-11, an event intended to promote the agricultural and processed products of the region.
Hosted in the district of Pundong, where the dish is a signature, the festival offered free bakmi pedes (spicy noodles), shortened to miedes, to visitors.
“Festival Makan Miedes is intended to introduce and promote this Pudong-made dish to the wider community,” Pundong district secretary Suyamto said during the festival on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
He added it was hoped the festival would reach out to foreign tourists passing through the area.
Suyamto explained that miedes had been passed down through the generations of the local community of Pundong, which now has approximately 50 vendors.
“Two miedes producers were involved in the festival,” Suyamto said.
