One Cup of Popular Hot Drink a Day ‘Cuts Dementia Risk’

It’s something that many people enjoy, but it’s been found that a certain type can have a considerable impact

A study has found that a cup of a much-loved hot drink every day could reduce the risk of developing dementia. The Verona University research found that coffee could have a considerable impact in preventing Alzheimer’s, the disease that causes dementia, in particular.

It said one cup of espresso per day has the ability to counteract the formation of something called tau proteins. They are notorious for accumulating in the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases.

But the study says that the compounds in espresso can work to actively break down the proteins. In turn, that can help prevent the damage they inflict on neurons and the cognitive damage associated with it.

Further, the study indicated that even enjoying an Espresso Martini cocktail could work just as well, reports the Mirror US.

In healthy individuals, tau proteins play a crucial role in stabilising brain structures. However, in those afflicted with neurodegenerative diseases, these proteins can clump together into harmful ‘fibrils’ that disrupt neural function, leading to cognitive impairments characteristic of dementia.

Lab tests showed that espresso can stop the formation of harmful fibrils. The study also found that about 96% of Italians drink espresso every day, which might be why fewer people have dementia in some areas. Using high-tech scanning methods, the team looked at the chemical makeup of espresso shots made from beans bought at the store.

Professor D’Onofrio said: “Whether enjoyed on its own or mixed into a latte, Americano or even a martini, espresso provides an ultra-concentrated jolt of caffeine to coffee lovers. But it might do more than just wake you up. Espresso compounds can inhibit tau protein aggregation – a process that is believed to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Making espresso involves grinding about 20 grams of coffee beans as finely as possible. The fine grind increases the surface area exposed to the brewing liquid, which should enhance extraction yield – the portion of the ground coffee that dissolves into the final drink.

Making an espresso shot, often called “pulling”, involves forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans. This creates a concentrated extract used as the base for other drinks, like the popular espresso martini. Despite past health concerns, regular espresso drinking has been linked to a lower risk of early death.

Recent studies show that this favourite drink could have positive effects when enjoyed in moderation. Coffee is packed with antioxidants and plant chemicals that reduce inflammation, potentially protecting against conditions like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver diseases, and some cancers.
