Cardiff Restaurant Poca Announces Opening Date as Bookings Open to Diners

A brand new small plates restaurant has announced its much-anticipated opening date — and it’s sooner than you think.

Poca, which is going to be run by the “hugely talented” chef behind Barry’s Alium and Dinas Powys’ The Humble Onion, Antonio Simone, will be opening in Pontcanna, Cardiff on Wednesday, June 28. Bookings are open as of Thursday, June 8 at 8pm. It is opening at the site of former restaurant La Cuina.

The new Cardiff restaurant is set to be a “small, neighbourhood, friendly eatery” and is described as having “an informal relaxed dining environment, focusing on humble ingredients of the highest quality, serving seasonal small plates, hand-selected wines and cocktails”.

With sharing at the forefront of the restaurant’s ethos, Poca’s small plates will showcase meat, fish and vegetables and will be matched with hand-selected wines and cocktails.

Sample dishes include salame finnocchiona, Iberico chorizo or capocollo (traditional Italian pork cold cut) for the charcuterie options; crispy sardines, malt vinegar mayonnaise and fermented chilli and cornish crab rarebit with Worcestershire sauce and agretti.

For meat lovers, your options include a pork belly hash brown with lardo and egg yolk, and lamb sweetbreads with sourdough, asparagus and brown butter jus. Vegetarians, fear not. You have an extensive choice too: roast cauliflower cheese croquettes with curry mayo, crispy confit potatoes with Manchego and roast garlic aioli and Calabrian burrata, for example.

Antonio, who was raised with proud Italian heritage but was born in Cardiff, says of his excitement for the opening: “We’re thrilled to be expanding our small plates concept, bringing a fresh and innovative menu to Pontcanna. We look forward to welcoming our valued customers, both old and new.”

Bookings for Poca will open on Thursday, June 8 at 8pm. For more information, see Poca’s website.
