“Lettuce was $2 a couple of months ago.”
Cardi B’s net worth may be well into the millions, but even she’s shocked by rising grocery prices caused by inflation and other factors. Weeks after social media was on fire about the lettuce shortage and the resulting price increases, the rapper went on a Twitter rant about the steep price increases of groceries.
In a handful of tweets, Cardi declared that “grocery shopping prices are ridiculous right now” and even suggested that it might be cheaper to go out to eat. She then expressed her surprise upon discovering that lettuce at her local grocery store costs a staggering $6.
Cardi also released a short video addressing those who might be wondering why she’s worried about rising grocery prices if she’s so wealthy. She went on to explain that she receives a weekly summary of home expenses and has gradually noticed an increase in the cost of groceries.
“I get a summary of the money that’s being spent in my home every week,” Cardi shared. “So when I’m starting to see that groceries is tripling up, it’s like, ‘Aye yo, what the f**k is going on?’…I went to the supermarket and I’m seeing that everything tripled up. That like lettuce was $2 a couple of months ago and now it’s f**kin seven…Cause if I think that sh*t’s crazy, I can only imagine what middle-class people or people in the hood is motherf**king thinking.”
Fortunately, there is a glimmer of hope for Cardi B and consumers across the country. Late last year, Business Insider reported that the lettuce shortage could begin to come to an end this month as lettuce from southern California and Arizona becomes available.
