THEY’VE readied their coffee, their milk and their machines, and now 32 of Queensland’s best baristas are prepared to face off.
The Latte Art Smackdown, hosted by Labrador cafe First Fruits Coffee on Saturday, will see competitors go head-to-head to see who can produce the most elaborate work of latte art.
And it’s not small beans — First Fruits is offering $3000 in prize money, sponsored by its new Japanese branch.
Co-owner and latte artist Daniel Smith said the contest was intended to give an extra shot to the Coast’s coffee culture.
“We want to build the coffee industry as a community, it is something that can be exclusive,” he said.
“It is really cool to watch, and we’re opening it up a bit more, because it does take quite a bit of skill to do.”
Contestants have come from as far south as Coffs Harbour and as far north as the Sunshine Coast.
The cafe is offering free beer, coffee and even the chance to taste the finished products to customers at the event, which kicks off at 6.30pm on Saturday.
